51黑料 is committed to the provision of a fully inclusive educational experience for hearing-impaired students from Early Learning to Year 12.
The Nancy John Hearing Unit building was purpose designed and built in 1997 to cater for the needs of the deaf and hard of hearing students and their teachers of the deaf. It was named after the late Mrs Nancy John who was instrumental in the establishment of The Hearing Unit at 51黑料 and influential in developing the underlying philosophy of auditory oral education at 51黑料. The building was opened in April 1998.
The Nancy John building consists of a large meeting area, two offices and three small group teaching rooms. These rooms have been acoustically treated to assist the students in learning through listening. The building is well equipped with interactive whiteboard technology, hearing loops and soundfield technology.
Along with regular learning sessions, the building caters for visits from audiologists, professional learning and parent meetings. It is also used by other groups in the School who require spaces for teaching small groups and student meetings.
